What you need to know

What’s in the box?

You will receive a modular rocker switch set, consisting of a switch insert, a rocker cover (or a set of them if you have chosen a 2-gang or 3-gang switch) and a 1-gang frame. (Set includes a bracket to connect frame and insert)

What does an electrician call this?

Where is this used in the home?

A 1-gang 2-way switch is commonly used for controlling a single light source from one or two places. A 1-gang intermediate is used as the middle switch of three, controlling a single light source (for example in a hallway). A 2-gang switch is used for controlling two light sources from one or two places. A 3-gang switch is commonly used for controlling three light sources from one or two places.

Installation

Because of the modular nature of European wiring accessories, installation is slightly different to fitting the encapsulated (moulded) switches and sockets common in the UK. Have a look at the step-by-step pictures below, or consult the more detailed Gira rocker switch installation instructions.

The concept

In case we here at Swtch needed any more proof that even humble white plastic light switches can transform an interior, along comes the new E3 range from Gira in Germany.

This purists’ version of the E3 Soft Touch range combines gentle contours with a minimalist square rocker and clean white glossy finish.

The detail

The gently curved contours of E3 White are not unlike Berker’s R.1 design, but feature a more geometric, square rocker and a dividing line on the side of the frame. This is a nod to its pastel-coloured cousin, the E3 Soft Touch range.

A USABLE SWITCH THAT SOFTLY SPEAKS VOLUMES

The inspiration

We see this as a personable go-to switch. It is a pleasingly symmetrical piece that’s the slightly softer big sister of the more basic incarnation – white, sharp-edged, gloss – found alone or stacked on walls in Scandinavian homes to operate much-needed overhead and tasked lighting during the long, dark winters. In UK homes, its size and shape alone will stand to make a difference.

The takeaway is that, whether brought in to sit on matt, flat colour, or to tone in with one shade within a brilliantly busy wallpaper, this is an easygoing, go-to, usable switch that softly speaks volumes.
