Inspired by Bauhaus principles, Serie 1930 is a switch range steeped in design history. This dimmer variety features a black semi-gloss surface similar to the original Bakelite. Electrician’s note: This dimmer can’t be wired in a 2-way combination with another switch, only with another dimmer!

Product Options

This product is a “universal” dimmer, suitable for conventional light bulbs, halogen light bulbs and most LED light sources which are controlled by electronic transformers.

What’s in the box?

This switch set consists of a rotary dimmer insert including handle and an outer frame.

Where is this used in the home?

A 1-gang 2-way switch is commonly used for controlling a single light source from one or two places. A 1-gang intermediate is used as the middle switch of three, controlling a single light source (for example in a hallway).

The concept

The blueprint for this classic rotary switch is one of the original Bauhaus switches (which can be found, amongst other places, in the Dessau Bauhaus, renovated true to its original state).

Despite its origins in the 1930s, it has a more restrained and modern look than our Duroplast Rotaries and an altogether smoother feel. A classic switch concept, which endured while fashions came and went.

The source

Berker’s “1930” series was designed in close consultation with the Architectural Research Department in Dessau. The elegantly simple rotary switches embody the pure functionality to which Berker has been committed ever since its foundation in 1919 – rather like the ethos of the Bauhaus school.

In other words, despite being a modern electrical product, the switches look just as if they had been selected by Walter Gropius himself!

The inspiration

The history of these switches is steeped in the 1930 interior styles of the Bauhaus period, but that doesn’t mean it’s purely for faithful restorations or retro-style houses. The matt, monochrome finishes complement a Scandi-style living room just as beautifully as this lavish wallpaper and velvet headboard.

One thing that we always notice in projects that are accessorised with these pieces, is that the round, black or white dots on the walls add an eye-catching detail wherever you decide to use them,
